I tried to scan myself with a dslr but it was a major pain in the ass to get consistent results, especially with color films.
What helped me decide is that website:
http://gear.vogelius.se/-editorials/plustek-8200i/index.htmlScanned this at 3600dpi, above that the file grows a lot but you don't get much (if any) more details. It's enough for my usage, but if you want huge prints or the highest quality possible it's not the best solution.
