I also have the occasional amatueirish photos of small animals like birds and squirrels, have ones where a squirrel family climbed overhead cable, then a branch to hide in a tree. Squirrels in shadow, almost dark, in front of a bright sky. If I don't want to discard these photos I have to brighten up the animals and darken the sky.
Regardless of low ISO values, these photos were already a challenge compared to those where a balanced exposure through the tree in the background was actually possible.
It may be that in this Squirrel example you prefer not to take the shot. Terrible conditions. I can see that.
Try to avoid the problems in situations like image related. Not my shot. You can clearly see the photographer had to struggle.
