It's a marketing buzzword to make customers think they're getting an upgrade, there's a reason Sony only use it in some cameras, and not in any of their APS-C range, despite making them.
And full frame cameras from 10 years ago still outperform aps-c cameras released this year, FF is really the only sensor size that makes sense, unless you just want a $300 entry level with kit lens.
