save it into a lossless format (be it a tiff or dng or png or whatever lossless compression format the scanning software supports)
then edit in a program of your choice (adjust exposure and black point)
for a colour film there is a slightly more complicated workflow as you have to compensate for the colour of the film base but the above is perfectly fine for a black and white film
