At the victory ceremony for the men’s 200-meter run, Americans Tommie Smith and John Carlos (gold and bronze medalists, respectively) stood in black socks, each with head bowed and a single black-gloved fist raised in the Black-power salute during the national anthem. The athletes described the gesture as a tribute to their African American heritage and a protest of their country’s treatment of Black citizens. Officials from the International Olympic Committee and the U.S. Olympic Committee judged the display to be counter to the ideals of the Games; both athletes were banned from the Olympic Village and sent home.
