>>3431923Pentax did start a completely new mount with Q, and it wasn't a complete failure like K-01, but it didn't survive for long because a 5x crop camera for the price of a 2x crop camera isn't going to sell too well no matter how kawaii it is.
Honestly, Pentax barely has the resources to maintain the two and a half DSLR mounts they currently have. With all those new FF and MF mirrorless cameras, and DSLRs staying strong only in the pro market segment where Pentax has nothing, I don't even know what they can do to stop fading into complete obscurity. Maybe join the L mount and release a motorized K-L adapter to appease the old fans?
>>3431932>a fullsized SLR mount on a mirrorless cameraMost importantly, a SLR mount doesn't allow you to put the rear element closer to the sensor, so wide angle lenses will be bigger, slower and/or more expensive than otherwise possible. K-01's kit prime was impressively thin, but due to the mount depth it had to be an awkward 60mm equivalent and relatively slow, while the kit zoom was just your usual bulky DSLR kit zoom.
