Digital has a higher investment benchmark between the camera(sometimes the lenses if it isn't fixed lense) batteries and storage....you also have to consider sensor technology is constantly changing. Film on the other hand, depends entirely on which format you are shooting. If we are saying 35mm, the initial investment is much lower but the time between snapping the shot to seeing the outcome is much higher and I can see the argument he was making for developing your skill... However, for me, digital arbitrates the experience. I don't feel compelled to put myself into creating a good image if I could just snap 100 pics of the same flower and sift through them for the one later on. The process is more intimate for me through film and drives the interest in learning how to make the shot over how to edit what I have.
