sonnars are essentially telephoto on the front half because of their asymmetry... makes them hard to design for wide angles... gets amazing contrast/rendering at the cost of some sharpness/focus shifting. if you get the topcor it would be more of a lateral move from the canon 1.8, not everyone likes the sonnar wild backgrounds but if you do then the contrast increase would be an upgrade if you do B/W.
