You can't have your cake and eat it too. Digital looks sterile. Digital *is* pretty sterile. Sterile is good if you know how to qualify and quantify an aesthetic. It's a good starting point. Lowering shadow detail while taking care to get the most range possible in your highlights is the trick on digital to the most film-like results. Anyone that understands the mediums knows how this works.
I'm not insulting your precious film, I'm saying that digital renders shadows more cleanly than film.
