So when i saw them today i knew they wanted photos.

You want it to mean "i like your hair/dress/shoes/cuteness", and that's all. Don't stare.
Good people will usually reflexively return a smile, shitty people will probably be weird about it. Depends how they 'judge' you in those first few milliseconds. Judging is a thing all women do almost instantly.
That said, probably most of the people i get grins out of know who i am and have seem my pics, so they want to have some of their own pics so their friends can tell them they are georgeous/etc.
...and of course i specify 'smile at me' if they want to be photographed. I can't always tell and dont always notice them aesthetically unless they do that.
