What you need to avoid are tripods like pic related. Not because of the latch-type mechanism, but just because these ~$15 tripods are just wobbly dinky crap. Ten years ago they fell apart in minutes, now the QC has improved a bit and they may last some weeks, but they still just aren't solid enough to be worth dealing with if you don't have to.
[It's possibly even what you got as $40 tripod on Amazon or eBay or in a local store, right? People who can't into China often fall for that.]
