Nicer gear is nicer, but once YOU are technically proficient, anything that works will do.
I have a pretty comprehensive collection of gear, but I find myself using an old 10MP Nikon DSLR when I need digital photographs because I like the colour and the file size, and the battery always seems to have enough charge to take a few pics with.
For my "real" photography I use a different camera almost every time I go out, just to give them all regular exercise, and because I know damned well that unless the camera's broken, I'll get the exact same photos with a Practika as a Canon as a Nikon as a Contax.
Gearfagging is for absolutely wet newbies who think they're gonna take amazing photos handheld in the dark at f/1.2.
