Think about it, all a long lense does is narrow the field of view of the camera.
If you make a 90 degree angle with your hands and imagine how much of the horizon is catured in it, it's a shitload.
Narrow that to 5 degrees, and it's a lot less.
Now imagine you're moving back and forward to fit a huge concrete block into the span of your hands.
You're standing a lot closer to it when they're at 90 dregees than when they're at 5.
