Based on what you've posted OP, I'd recommend doing more browsing and really thinking about composition. Even if you master manipulating your camera's settings, if you don't understand composition and lighting direction, you're going to take shittier pictures.
You've got a good place to start though. Glad you picked up a dslr. Don't let any of the gearfags shame you.
