play with the sliders until you get it somewhat right, do it on another layer so you can fix just that area without desaturating the rest of the pic.
>In your edit have you just increased contrast?mostly, I used Color Efex's "Pro Contrast" tool (the dynamic contrast slider can be nice if not overdone) and then played with the curves a little.
