>>3430918 is exactly right. So lets say you meter an 8 second exposure, if you dodge the sky for 4 seconds you'd be doing the same thing as using a 1 stop GND filter. To duplicate a 2 stop filter, you'd dodge for 6 of the 8 seconds. I would never try going harder than that though. It's pretty hard to do it on exposures that are shorter than a few seconds, but on large format it's easy to have long exposures. It's also super convenient with large format because you have a darkslide in your hand during the exposure. Might as well make use of it!
And I'm actually starting to use longer lenses way more often than I used to, mostly my 135 and 210. Getting a very different feel from this prairie stuff with it. Though in the mountains I often need the wider 75 and 90mm lenses. Each really has their purpose.
