As for why take photos, I like trains. So I started taking photos of trains. I got to where I felt like I was being limited in my train photography by using just my phone, so I bought a point-and-shoot and started using it. My gf saw me using it and said she had a better camera I could borrow that she never used, and it turned out to be a D80.
So my experience of this hobby is it helps to already be passionate about something (wildlife, architecture, sports, fashion, etc) that you want to capture with images.
