First, go out a take lots of photos. Get a cheap FF dslr and some old film lens on the cheap. Take landscapes, portraits, street stuff, go to local music events, fine art, abstract, whatever. Shoot, shoot, shoot. Study the greats, go to museums and see actual prints. Make actual prints. Learn both the digital and analog workflows. Shoot film and dev film, print it in the darkroom. Shoot digitally and edit with PS. Learn color management. Learn how prepare files for print. Learn to use LF inkjet printers. Focus on composition. Shoot color, shoot b/w. Try new things.
Ok, you're good now. Now you need to find a niche in the industry. This just comes down to what you like to shoot and what you see success in. Once(if) you find a niche, get autist and become the best. Once you know youre the best, make sure others know too. Network, meet people. Get a client or 2, do good work. Build up from there.
Its a fierce industry, there is no guarantee you'll be successful.
