If you go west for dark skies be sure to try to point up into space or west toward Ireland, as I bet you can pick up Birmingham pollution from 50-100 miles. Cloudy skies or humid weather will also help to project light pollution out further. If you make it to north west wales then you would be dealing with Dublin and the Welsh towns there.
In between Aberystwyth and Knighton probably would be the best possible spot in Wales. As you don't want to get too close to Cardiff either. Also don't go when the moon is going to be out unless you want only moon shots.
