Yes, they're useful as both protection and against light from the side affecting your image. You basically never want light from the side, it nothing to do with what you see in front and the effect is shit. Plus it offers a little protection to your lens. As you might guess, this little piece of plastic is bascially included with any decent lens maker's lens.
The shape is defined by how the FoV of the lens is, you just want the light from the side blocked but obviously not the image obscured.
