>>3270612It's pretty damn big. It's as tall as me and the base is about 28x28 inches. This model is rather nice because it sits upright which minimizes the footprint.
That four hours is to scan all six 4x5 sheets at full resolution. Full resolution depends on the format - the scanner can only ready up to 16,000 pixels per drum rotation, which means you can get 2kdpi on 8x10 sheets, 4k on 4x5, something like 7k on medium format or about 11k on 35mm. Of course it's silly to scan film at 11kdpi.
I had a guy fly out to do an initial maintenance and install of the machine as it sat for about 10 years or more. There aren't too many items that wear out, but of course one of the boards or whatever could fail on it. He says he likes to check on the scanners every 2 to 3 years if possible. He cleans and lubes them, resets all the basic firmware and internal settings, etc.
I like to say the machine cost about as much as a nice full frame digital camera with a lens. I negotiated that the seller would pay for shipping which came on a freight truck from California (delivered by Sugar?). Of course he packed it terribly and didn't listen to my critical steps about how to lock the moving parts so it sustained some mechanical damage in transport. Luckily I'm good at fixing shit like that as I worked on German cars for over a decade. Turns out German scanners aren't all that different in some ways.
Another older sheet. Ektar.
