There are two plus points to the inset front element, it prevents it from bumping into shit and it acts as a built in lens hood (they still bothered to include a detachable one though for some reason). I did wonder if there's anything in the barrel in front of the glass or whether it could be hacksawed off.
The Sony 100mm, Pentax 100mm, Sigma 105mm, Tokina 100mm, Sigma 70mm, and probably a few others also have the same "feature", so it's not like it's just Tamron being retarded. Or there's some other reason for it that we're not realising, maybe something to do with filters.
