I wouldn't be discouraged. Make good work, market yourself, but have a day job to pay the bills. The vast majority of fine artists do not make their sole income from their work but usually rely on a secondary income. I rely on teaching. It's a good gig and it's quite satisfying and fun. With luck you can find a satisfying day job that will leave you time and energy to continue to produce work. Share your work and make connections with people. It will take time but it is very doable to at least have local success in art and with luck more than local success.
