In both cases the subjects were against the water and I felt I could bring them forward more by playing with the red and blue channels in photoshop, and thus went with monochrome. I can see how maybe they appear too contrasty like that though. The book I'm reading at the moment cautions against an apparently very common mistake beginners make of trying to use the full dynamic range with high contrast in every image, because of it's inherent eye-catching nature, even if it doesn't lend itself to the mood of the moment that the photo was trying to capture.

I was gifted an old EF 75-300 from the mid 90s but it's just so damn soft. at some point I should test it at different focal lengths and apertures to see what the "usable" range is
