I'm 29 and a few of my close friends are "pro" photographers/artists. I can tell you that taking photographs is the smallest part of their job. They have to spend every waking moment networking, going to parties and awkwardly promoting themselves in case someone is getting married, spamming Facebook and Twitter with deals and talking to corporations hoping to do some product photography. Then on the off-chance they get a gig and finish the shoot they need to be on call at all hours to make changes and answer demanding clients who are mad because one pixel on the product shot was misaligned or a guest at a wedding is upset because they didn't airbrush out her double chin. Then they need to worry about the new, younger photographers entering the scene who do the same job for 1/3 of the price so there's no security.
It doesn't sound like a career for me so I don't pursue it. I'd rather do this as a hobby so it's still fun and not a chore I grow to hate.
