The 100-300 panasonic is a favorite among wildlife shooters and its top end aperture is equivalent to f/11. Its widely regarded as a great lens and competitive with the much more expensive leica 100-400. Its like 500 bucks and around 520 grams.
f/11 is within 1 standard stop of f/9 equivalent. You're not gaining that much more light with the $12k lens although you are effectively getting another 200mm. If you really need that extra reach, I'd say the leica 100-400 would be the buy for about $1500, although it tops out at just over f/12 equivalent.
The 100-300 is more than adequate for most people because the majority of wildlife photographers are out during the day in well lit conditions anyway. The compromise 99% of people are willing to make is that aperture over the weight of their gear.
Im keeping an eye on the price of the 100-300 and wanna pick it up on sale sometime.
