It's basiclly a complete unedited data readout of the digital sensor, with no JPG compression and allows for better color correction during editing without banding. The sensor outputs a 10-bit image and is saved when using RAW (.CRW), which would be better than the 8-bit JPG image it can output. Modern DSLR cameras can output 14-bits and higher, providing even more editing headroom.
