The DP1 (15mp x3) looks quite a bit better than a D7000 (16mp) and close to an NX1 (28mp). (If the NX1 seems like an odd choice it's because it's a near-30mp APS-C with no AA.)
I would speculate that some of the advantage is really no AA filter. Though ironically there's stair stepping and aliasing in the DP1 which makes it look like it honestly needs one. Still, it's punching well above its MP class. Not 3x better but I would concede close to your evaluation of 2x in terms of detail.
