There's literally nothing to "critique" in those shots. The only thing they can do is learn how to tell photos and pictures apart.

Trying to photograph some jewelry. No matter what I do I can't get the pictures to look right. It's allways either too bright, too dark, or too grey and washed out. I've tried lighting it dozens of different ways.

Indirect sunlight from above
Direct sunlight from above
Direct sunlight from the side
Overhead halogen light-bulb
Ambient light only

I've also tried diffusing all of the above with cooking paper, and several different fabrics, but nothing seems to work. I've also tried everything I can think of in PS6. Any advice?

If you don't need to upgrade your phone, you already have a good digital camera that will suit your needs.
Learn a little about lightning and composition, your shots will look fine taken with a phone and a little thought

IF I put them on Flickr or IG, I prefer them like this. I don't like square ratio and I don't like Flickr's tight layout.

Thanks bruh. It was really hard to focus... These were all manual focused with the 50 1.8 and kit lens. The AF of my 1000d is really bad.

Like yours, maybe add some contrast to his face?

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM lens appears to have something of a reputation with seasoned photographers. I'm quite interested in finding out if others here either own or have hired this lens for use with a FF camera and what their comment on it might be. It weighs quite a bit and the lens interior shifts outwards when the focus is turned (is this the only prime that does this?)

There's plenty of image samples from this lens online. But I'd like to know if people talk it up to justify the purchase or if it really does have some qualities that make it an attractive purchase. It's expensive enough to make me dwell on it rather than just rush out and get one.

I'd love to see some pictures if anyone has taken any with this lens and would care to share.

Looks underexposed and the white balance seems off.
Shadow is too harsh. To counter this you need a bigger light source or bring it closer to the object.

At $2000+ new, you're paying about 6 times more for it than the f1.8, for probably 75% of the "quality." Whether or not, that extra 25% is worth it the $1700 is obviously up to you. Personally I'm good with my f1.8 on my 5D3. But if you have the cash to blow, you're probably not gonna find a better portrait lens for Canon.

Yes, they lack the fill light. Also, push your white levels on post, remember that the white balance of your camera is gonna average them so it's gonna look grey

Seriously, you're best off using a phone. Anything that isn't a 2012 budget tier phone will do for you. Dedicated budget cameras went out in favor of phones a long time ago unless you look to spend over $700. In which case just get yourself a $700 phone like a S6.

If you still want a decent camera then look at the Olympus/Panasonic m4/3 range, Sony NEX, Sony RX100 or Fuji X-E1/E2.

For what the lens is worth I think it did ok so far, but slow AF makes it really painful sometimes, especially with cars driving towards you where fast AF is key. Do you think this is because of the motor of the lens or the 600D just being slow? Anyone might wanna share his experience with similar lenses or the AF of the 600D?

Man, jewellery is HARD. You need numerous light sources carefully arranged to pick up the right glints, with black areas around your light sources to get the reflections right. Lighting is about the absence of light as much as its presence. Keep light on metal low enough that your highlights still have colour in them, rather than whiting out. Try to get some hard light into the stone.

No, more primes do this.
For example my Sigma 50 f/1.4 EX HSM.
I think it's called "block focusing"

It's how you would focus a very simple one element lens.
