me personally, OFF.
with it ON, it takes 1 or 2 minutes to do its thing before you can take your next shot.
easier to just fix in post with Lightroom.

that's pretty much it. I met with a girl who works on his app for him and she wanted some photos from me so that's pretty cool

It's just a built-in dark frame process. If you're only shooting one shot, it's best to leave it on. If you're planning on stacking many shots into a trail, you're better leaving it off and doing your dark frames manually- otherwise you're going to have gaps in your stars (because the camera takes a dark frame after every exposure, and the stars continue to move during that dark frame process)

You do know that there is more to photography than owning a system camera right ? You could teach her about composition, post processing, lighting , introduce her to some cool photographers like bresson and salgado. But no you are not a photographer, you are a camera technician.

What this guy said op, and read up about exposure and composition, look up the channel art of photography to get to know some nice photographers and get inspiration and the tonynorthrup channel as wel for more tips about some specific type of photography, just buy one of those cameras with the 18-50 or 18-55 kit lens, that is all you will ever need to get on learning. Buying a canon rebel is just waste of money. Canon has the worst crop system out there. If you really want a DSLR go for the nikon d3200
