No one is saying the process of making art isn't important, but when you are learning that process is mostly irrelevant.
You are learning how to use a camera, not creating works of art.
If you truly want to learn photography you will stop and think even with digital. You will consider what settings you are using, then take a shot with those settings. Now on digital you can instantly see how those specific settings affect a certain scene, and either see that they work, or try again and change something.
Set up a tripod, take the same photo changing one setting each time, and you now have a greater understanding of each of those settings and how they interact.
This is something film won't let you do.
Your photos aren't better just because they were taken on film.
