Smaller cards means less data transfers at once, the potential to shoot less since you have less space (=thinking more about your shots). You don't really need crazy amounts of space do you? Unless you shoot video, or are using a 36MP+ camera.
Hell when I got my D810, I got 16 GB cards so I have about ~200 shots per card. It's plenty for when I need it, but I'm also mindful of how much I'm shooting so that I think more before pressing the shutter button. I used to scoff at such a notion, but lately it's important to me, so....
