Will we ever see a pancake lens from Canon that is both 50mm or wider and f/1.8 or faster?

A fast lens for me is all about making it into some pocket, not worrying too much about it and is always there when the lights go down.

Sigma's 24mm f/1.4 seems great, but bulky as well!

Any others like these?

How fucking delicate is your wrist that you can't carry the 50mm f/1.8II on your DSLR? I street shoot with my 24-70mm f/2.8 VC USD on my fool frame body and I don't complain about the size and weight.

The point that I was making is that both the EF 50mm f/1.8, MKI and MKII are already tiny and light as fuck. The STM version is even smaller. Complaining about their size and weight just makes you sound a complete and full retard. If you want a tiny shooting system then obviously a DSLR isn't for you.

Everyone has to have a good reason for why they can't take the good photos they know they're capable of. Some people pick dynamic range, some pick lens sharpness, and some pick lens size. It's no more or less ridiculous than any of the rest. Don't judge.

Not just bigger elements.

You also need more elements to properly correct a fast lens.
Because aberrations are far more noticeable at f/1.4 than they are at f/2.8.

Explain how it's stupid.

Aberrations happen in a consistent and predictable manner, otherwise they wouldn't be able to design lenses that correct for them. You can map a matrix transformation to the sensor output to correct for such. The only problem with doing so now is that it takes a significant amount of mathematical processing to make the corrections.

The only place that this isn't fully possible is when you have error due to the spatial relationship between the camera and the subject like parallax error, but with a powerful enough processor and some clever algorithms, you can detect and correct those is a decently high percentage of attempts.

How about the Noctilux? It's fucking tiny for a 50mm f0.95.
It lets in 2x the amount of light as a f1.4 lens.

The biggest problem is axial chromatic aberrations.

Meaning not all colors are focused at the same distance.
ie: the red and/or blue channel is slightly out of focus even though the green channel is fine.

Unless you figure out some kind of "unblur" algorithm that makes out of focus shots appear in focus you cannot fully correct for axial chromatic aberrations.

We already have tremendous computing power when processing raw files.
Yet only some aberrations can get be corrected.

Up to a point. We already understand how light behaves to such a point where we can fairly easily create algorithms that do everything that corrective groups do (you know how all modern lenses are designed by computers, right?) -- the only limiting factor is processing power, and there will literally be no information losses with these kinds of processing (granted, you can't do better than the resolving power of the lens without creating new information through stuff like interpolation, but we already do that for the area between photosites...).

Homie, you don't know shit about me. I just spent $2k on a bicycle and dropped another 1k on photography sundries (mainly putting together an astro setup). I have no problem affording any of this stuff. I'm just saying that technology is going in a direction that's going to make a lot of interesting changes in lens design in the next few decades. Lightfield sensors are only the start.

Anything that says leica, voigtlander, canon, contax or nikon on it.

Rf glass is generally better as the small flange distance makes lens design easier.

Stay away from Russian stuff and you can't go wrong.

Actually, I also own a 24-70mm f/2.8 VC USD, and that lens is not light by any means! Even my 70-200 f/4 IS USM is lighter!

Now, on to the "important" stuff, the 50mm f/1.8 is indeed a very light lens and I use it just as I said. I put it in my pocket and [almost] forget about it. It is somehow bulky to carry around in your pocket. If you could slice that size in half and still have the same functionality why wouldn't you?

It's not about wrist injuries... it's about comfort! I wouldn't like to carry around all my stuff all the time. I must pick it wisely before leaving home, and a fast lens is always appreciated, even better if I can completely forget about it in my pocket.

Russian lenses are some of the best lenses you can get on a [spoiler:lit]small budget[spoiler:lit]

I mean damn man my Helios 44-2 is pretty damn good considering I paid less than a Starbucks latte for it lmao.

They are some of the worst lenses and they go for some of the lowest prices.

This doesn't mean to say they are of no use, the same way 90% of people will never see any benefit from buying anything other than an entry level dslr. Nothing wrong with a rabble, but it's still the worst on the market.

To all the pixel peepers and critiques, this is straight export from the camera raw, only had to downsize a bit. Didn't scale it under 1000px because too lazy to crop out parts.

I have the 44-2 and the 44-4m but I need to get an adapter with a step for the 4m to use it so I mostly use the 44-2 and for a 50 year old lens that I paid buttons for its pretty fucking good.
