The 14 FPS on the 1Dx is manual-focus and jpeg only. I'm assuming this 15 FPS on the D5 will have AF and RAW.

Being a digital photographer myself, I don't really know.

Especially with having a crazy fast continuos shooting, I mean, pretty much none of us really need all those fps, kind of a stupid reason to fawn over a new camera

I am assuming it won't.

There is probably a physical limitation on how fast you can flip a mirror.

But, notice that I pointed out, that the 1DX is manual focus and .jpeg only @ 14 FPS. It can shoot RAW and with AF @ 12 FPS. Even if there is a "physical limitation on how fast you can flip a mirror", surely there must be a way to implement usable AF and RAW capabilities even if the max FPS for an SLR-style camera is 14-15?

AF requires stable light to be reflected down into the AF sensor/processor. With the mirror up, or flapping around, almost constantly to achieve 15fps, there isn't enough time for the light to be hitting an AF array with enough consistency for the processor to guess what's going on in the frame.

Might it be possible someday? Sure. Is there any reason at all to believe that Nikon figured it out where Canon didn't? No. None. Might they have? Sure. But is there any hint of that in the "leak"? Not even a little bit.

That's not brand whoring, that's just taking notice of the fact that technology will continue to improve incrementally like it always has.

I don't know why you think I'm being a brandwhore for suggesting that the NEW Nikon flagship will probably be a step up from the few-years-old 1Dx? And I'm sure whatever Canon comes up with will have incremental improvements as well.

On the other hand, you want to talk about brandfagging? Thinking that not only are there limits on what can be done with SLR cameras, but that Canon of course was the first to reach those limits and that any other brand is just playing catchup...that could be interpreted as its own flavor of brand-whoring.

Exactly which limitation are we talking about here?

In terms of the ability to capture a huge amount of RAWs at once, that has a few variables: memory card write-speed, processing power, buffer size. Battery life affects how quick the camera can shoot in burst mode. The ability to use AF @ a higher FPS is the only thing that's really being discussed right now.

No it isn't.

Anyone worried about that would just shoot at a lower fps.
That's what CL mode is for.

Many professionals would love to have the option to shoot more fps regardless what that does to the battery and buffer.

that mirror makes all the difference in the world. And because of it, yes, it is a light year jump. a DSLR has to provide an optical light path to the viewfinder, move the mirror back and forth very quickly, expose light to the sensor for the correct amount of time,and still leave light left over to hit the autofocus sensor. In order to get autofocus at faster speeds, the mirror would have to stay up, and you would lose your optical viewfinder.

Wut?

The AF sensor gets light when the mirror is down, ie: when the viewfinder shows a picture.
The main mirror is translucent and a secondary mirror behind it provides the image to the AF sensor.

yes that's how it's done currently, and that's where the limitations are coming from. But if they were to lock the mirror up and use on-sensor AF pixels, they could continue to operate as exposure was being taken via an electronic shutter.
