I have a tripod and the d7100 has mirror up mode too which I noticed helps quite a bit. Remote is always in my bag too so I have all the tools, just need the experience now.
I'll give your sharpening method a try. There's so many different ones and I'd like to learn why they give different results but its such a huge topic to try and tackle for a novice.
I've thought about taking a Photoshop course but fear that its going to be brutally basic shit. I'm not tech illiterate but I don't have image editing background at all and don't nwant to end up in a course that teaches me how to play with RAW sliders.
