In my opinion it is a good all-rounder that will last you couple years and serve as a nice stepping stone towards better, more expensive gear. As OP said, he's looking to start somewhere.
I just wanted to say that I did the same thing, and I think it was excellent choice.
OP: If you'll be looking for a decent wide angle zoom next, I highly recommend the new-ish Sigma 17-50/2.8. As not even with wildlife you'll want a telephoto. Picture related, these ducklings were ignoring their mother and charging me - I couldn't get them in shot with my Tamron 70-300 before they walked past my MFD.
