Glass composition, coating type, haze & dust present in the lens, and the strength of flare evident in a shot can all affect color rendering.
Lenses of a particular brand tend to be pretty close to one another, generally using the same coatings and (most of) the same types of glass, but you see the variation even within those matching brands if you look for it:

You wanted lenses with consistent color rendering and consistent film if you wanted a consistent color palette. Nowadays it doesn't really matter because it's well within the scope of WB correction and most people never see it thanks to auto-WB (and, in part, shifting attitudes towards the importance of consistent WB, but that's another matter) canceling it out.
