It's more important for your photography to have a meaning than to look good. Think about shooting a subject worth thinking about before trying to make it look nice.

If taking pictures of moving animals in low light, underexposing by half a stop or so will often buy you enough extra shutter speed to prevent motion blur without cranking up ISO in to noisy mess territory. There should still be enough detail in the dark areas to allow you to adjust in post back up to desired final exposure.
