Couldn't find a thread, so I decided to make one.

RAW-Postprocessing in Photoshop and Lightroom.

Do you open your RAWs with PS or LR? Or do you use a completely different program?
Which presets do you use?
Do you have a favourite preset for different motifs (people, nature, architecture...)?
Do you create your own presets, or do you download them?
VSCO, yes or no?

I remember lr poppin up and show me a random folder and annoying messages so i never bothered lr
vsco..depends the fuji x images are diamond quality..only messing with contrasts, clarity and others..nik software is good too

I use Lr far more than photoshop these days. I find the workflow much better when batch processing.
Previously I had been using Aperture because I LOVED it but since Apple decided to discontinue it I made the switch. As far as presets I highly recommend "The Nik collection"

I use Darktable. Good alternative is Rawtherapee. Lr is for plebeians.

Basic workflow:
1) Copy raw images from card to folder on computer. Folder is named "YYYY.MM.DD - [Subject] - Format."
2) I open Lr and import the raws.
3) Do global adjustments in Lr, such as WB, basic rotation and cropping, and basic exposure adjustments.
4) For images that I want to edit further, I bounce over the Ps. When I'm done in Ps, I just save the image, close it in Ps, and go back to Lr. When you do that, the saved file is already waiting for you in Lr.
5) Then I use one of the many export presets to export the file as a jpg.

1. Photomechanic - sort through the crap and give 3-5 ratings to anything I think is worth a damn, delete the other 50% of the shots
2. Import to lightroom - apply © during import (make duplicate copy)
3. edit in LR (usually increase contrast and bring exposure down if I STTR)
4. edit in PS - if something is taking away from a quality shot (like a lamp post) via content aware
5. send to MPix for prints

Lightroom, has worked fine for me since I started (not that long ago), I never bothered trying other softwares actually. I sometimes re-open shots in Ps to use the warp tool

Im not using presets all that often, but I sometimes apply a "creative" preset and lower the values since theyre often extreme (at least on my pictures :(

Not really, I try out different things

I use DPP (Digital Photo Professional) its a batch process program with room for settings tweaking, nothing like Lightroom though. I still prefer it, much more simple & fast.

LR has more resources and presets online.
C1 is said to have a better output.
OP better camera profiling.

Any seem ok to me, you just have to get used to them.
C1 pro is 23€ for sony cameras.

I import from card in LR, applying metadata and copyright info, converting to DNG

Don't use presets, just sync settings and sometimes VSCO

Very rarely. I played with it a few times but I don't really like it. It's good for black and white conversion though but I don't really do b&w.

Darktable got me curious, maybe I'm gonna take a look at that.

So far, I'm starting with Ps and Lr and it looks pretty neat so far. Haven't established a "routine" yet.

Technically Ps can't handle RAWs. When you open them in Ps, it actually opens ACR (Adobe Camera Raw), so you get the same editing tools as you do in Lr, which is nothing but ACR (with a couple of extra things) with file management tools added on top.

You won't find better workflow than lightroom and photoshop.

import photos into individual folders by date
Go through photos individually, giving ratings to them. 1-5 stars, and rejects (for missed exposure, missed focus, blinking, sneezing, etc) Then go through your starred images more slowly, and select your "picks"

Filter out just your picks, and do preliminary exposure/contrast/color edits (apply batch edits where possible) and take any photos that need defined local adjustments to photoshop.

I've been trying to get the hang of editing in Photoshop for my landscapes but struggling with a few basic things.

Any good guides out there? I mostly have trouble fixing skies or ending up with a photo that doesn't look quite natural. I know I'm still missing some basic techniques.

Biggest problem I have is editing only part of a picture without compromising the rest.

Lack of practice and understanding of light and color. Keep practicing, and every time you make an edit, be sure that it can be explained by the scene (for instance, be sure your ground isn't brighter than your sky, because that doesn't make sense, etc)

For the first cull, I find it is best to set the filter to equal no stars, then go through with a keep or delete (2 for those I keep, 1 for those I delete). Set the filter so they go away and keep you from second guessing choices.

First pass is for shit like poor exposure, missed focus, blinking, and other glaring problems. If it's technically ok, it passes this round.

Change the filter to 1 star, then delete the culls. Next up, I go again, but more critically deciding between similar poses, looking for images that are more visually interesting and the like.

how is this even possible? even if you underexpose 2 full stops on ANY camera, you can recover them just fine, if you shot raw. not to mention, you would have to be shooting in full M to fuck up your exposure enough to not be able to recover it

My workflow will flow something like this:

Import photos into Lightroom and begin basic adjustments such as white balance, crop and light exposure adjustments.

I'll export to Photomatix for HDR blending if it's a night photo (no I'm not an overcooked HDR babby, I just blend night photos for an even exposure)

Then I'll take my final product into Photoshop, either from Lightroom or Photomatix depending on what I've done previously and will typically do 70% of my work in Photoshop.

I just feel that buying the sub would be too pressuring. And I can get a prety decent student discount on PS still

I use Lr because my workflow in it is fast and smooth. I open up Lr -> import -> process (WB, Contrast, Clarity etc.) -> Export. I'm kind of forced to learn Ps if I want to get a job in a studio or something similar. I've been rejected 4 times due to my lack of knowledge with Ps. They said that my portfolio is above average and my portraits are pretty good BUT because I don't know Ps they won't hire me. I remember when I was asked with what did I process my photos (the first two interviews) and I answered Lightroom they were clueless with what that is. Sure Ps is more powerful but for a fucking photo place that mostly does portraits and retouches them a little they require you to know Ps CS3 :|

So OP if you live in Europe - learn a little Ps it might help if you want to work something photography related. I've tried Darktable and to be honest it's pretty nice.

Not him, but when you have an image you want to edit more precisely, or with masks or whatever, you just do your exposure/white balance corrections in lightroom, and then hit Ctrl + e and it pops up in Photoshop with your lightroom corrections. You do your edit, and save in whatever format you want (uncompressed and layered TIFF in my case), and close out of photoshop, and your edited file is now sitting in your Lightroom library ready for export.

Not knowing PS and applying to retouch at a studio is pretty dumb. LR will get you color corrected and even styled, sure. PS will retouch, which is what a portrait studio actually needs.

Anyone can use LR. I've taught high school interns to color correct in an afternoon.

Why is it that when you use the import utility in LR you HAVE to put the photos into a new folder that is named via the import date? Is it possible to turn this off?

I have my own folder naming scheme (eg. 034 - Yellowstone 2015) and I want to just import my photos directly into that folder, not into "034 - Yellowstone 205 / 06-23-2015"

It's so fucking frustrating that I just import photos into folders using windows and then 'sync' my collection afterwards in LR to make the new folders show up.

Because it's made to take pictures off of removable media and import them to your computer, not for you to copy shit from one folder to another on a single hdd.

As for your naming, you're hamstringing yourself. Just use the default system and take advantage of catalogs, keywords and keyword sets...but if you insist, http://www.learn-to-lightroom.com/articles/import-advanced-options/

But that's exactly what I'm doing. Just pulling it off my camera SD and putting it in a folder on my HDD.

Only instead of letting me do what I want, LR forces me to put it in a subfolder by date. Fuck that.

Actually your link pointed out the 'organize by' option in import, which it seems like if you pick 'into one folder' it wont create a subfolder by date.
