Let's say there's wedding photographer from Kansas and a photographer from NYC. Regardless of how good Kansas photographers work is, people will prefer photographer from New York and he will get more work than the one from Kansas. It's just a simple geography and a "title game." That why so many people who desires to become professional photographer goes to expensive private art schools in NY like SVA. Just for the "title sake." (Heard this from actual NYC photographers)
I've seen people hiring "photographers" from New York for their wedding and regretting their decisions at least 12 times a year.
Internet can help you spread your work but sadly, word "NYC" opens up people's wallet better than good works.
