This is how you separate the elements if intending to remove and replace the balsam entirely, but yo can also just melt it a bit and see if it anneals to fill the gap... same as sunlight except theres no UV to kill growths, and the heat may not be enough to do so... and you may end up with a misaligned element group.
I'd do it. But generally when a lens has separation it's sort of a junker anyway becasue that also means it's fungally infectious to other canada balsam based cemented lenses. Fuck that.
That said newer lenses use UV cured synthetic cements that NEVER melt and liekly resist fungus like solid glass. So they might be largely immune to fungus... that won;t stop it depositing spores and growing ON everyhting else though.
Ziplock bag the fucker and sit it in the sun for a while. See ho wmuch it flares when you actually use it, and weigh up how much you care about the camera its mounted to, and the gear you store it near.
