He should read whatever takes his fancy, that's why I don't recommend a book unless someone is looking for specific help in a specific direction. If he wants to get a book by daido and studies it to see what works and what doesn't then utilises these approaches in his work, cool, go for it. If he wants to get "The 35mm handbook" and go through it page by page taking in loads of theory, then cool, go for it.
To put this in a real world example, some people learn guitar using a "how to learn guitar volume 1" book, others buy a songbook from one of their preferred artists and teach themselves through mimicry. The best method will depend on the pupil, but whatever material he uses, it will make for quicker progress than just plucking strings and hoping for the best.
I see a fuck ton of people criticising my advice, yet they never offer any of their own advice, nor do they post up photos that show they're not talentless buttfuckers.
