If I have crop sensor, say a Canon with a factor of 1.6, and I use a 50mm lens, I understand that it frames like an 80mm lens on full frame, but does it also compress the background and have the same distortion as an 80mm lens?

yes, if you use the same relative aperture it will be the exact same
ie 1.8 on crop = 2.8 on ff

it's just a reduction in fov, the lens doesn't actually distort anything

stand a distance away from something, and "crop" your vision with your hands

you'll notice the same kind of compression effect

Yes. compression and distortion come from distance from the scene, not the lens. So if you're standing in the same spot (which you would be, since the FOV is nearly the same) it will look the same.

You're saying that if you shot a photo at 50mm on a 35 equiv sensor and then shot at 35mm on a crop sensor, with the same framing of the same subject on both images, the distortion and compression would look exactly the same?

Not sure I buy that.

50mm f/5.0 on full frame
35mm f/3.5 on aps-c
25mm f/2.5 on four thirds

these three lens and sensor and aperture combos create exactly identical images

compression wise, yes, but framing, no you would have to move because you would lose a lot of the image

tldr;
>if you stand in the same place, all your lenses will have the same distortion as it is measured by distance to subject
>if you use crop (aps-c or 4/3) you will have to reposition yourself (or crop the FF after) to have the same framing
>if you move to recompose, you'll change the distortion/compression

You're thinking of having the exact same lens on both bodies. With a 35mm on APS-C and 50mm on FF you would get the same framing and compression from the same position.

it's actually closer ~33mm on non-canon and ~31mm on Canon (49.6mm and 49.5mm)
