Yes, I had connections, but I still had to write a proposal and whatnot even though I was close friends with the curator of that particular gallery.
If your project is going to be self-funded and not reliant on grants, then start it as soon as you can! After you've created a few photos write an artist proposal. If you haven't done that before then just Google it. You basically need to write about the concept of your series of work and its cultural and artistic merit, technical things about how it will be exhibited such as the paper they'll be printed on and detailing how it will be framed, a budget, pricing of your work and their commission, and show them the work you've already done. Galleries know nothing is set in stone, everyone almost always changes their mind on something so don't worry about following your proposal exactly.
Submit your proposal in a few galleries around town and you're sure to get a place that will exhibit your work.
If you live in a city that has <100,000 people, then you're in luck, its easier to get exhibited in smaller towns than larger towns. This is because even though the smaller towns have less galleries, there are more artists per capita in the larger ones wanting to get exhibited.
