So is the Sony RX100 and Ricoh GR the go to pocket cameras? I find myself not wanting to bring my DSLR with me anywhere because its so clunky and kinda seems like the RX and GR are the only noteworthy cameras that fit in your jeans pocket.

You should really not try to spend as few as possible on a tripod
you never know what you're going to do with it
I sometimes use mine like a monopod and just hold it by the end of the legs to get an even higher point of view
See this picture, I'm holding my DSLR with an 8mm fisheye on it, and I knew tripod wasn't going to just break, and that's always a good thing
You should only buy gear you can trust

Of course, if you're only doing portrait, I guess you can get things done with a 15 dollar piece of chinese crap

I just bought a 50/1.8D and i'm going to blog about it. Coming from AIS lenses, it's a plasticky toy. Coming from G-series lenses, it's a plasticky toy. The lens is about 1 cm longer than the 50/1.8D, but most of it is "hood". The front element is rather recessed, and the elements themselves are at about the same place as on the series E lens. Of course, the D lens is an excellent double Gauss design, and the series E lens is a good but more basic Tessar.

The focus ring is plasticky, and sometimes sticks. No damping either. Travel is good, about 100 degrees. Aperture ring is notchy, plasticky, and generally unpleasant to use compared to AIS master race. The body feels hollow and is made with thin plastic, generally feeling less solid than almost any plastic bodied AF-S lens.

Optically, it's everything you could wish for. Sharp all over at F4, acceptably sharp corners and sharp center wide open.

I just got a Chinon CX (aka Argus CR-2) at a garage sale. Worked fine, but when I turned the self-timer lever and took a picture, it died mid-shot and so the mirror is stuck up, the shutter is closed, and the advance lever is stuck. The mirror is not stuck due to the foam, it's stuck due to a mechanism. I have the bottom plate taken off but can't figure anything out, other than I can get the film advance lever to move if I push a small lever sort of thing out of the way.

Anyone know what to do? Where I can I find videos which show the inner workings of these film cameras?

look at some of the modern limited primes. They're all high quality, and relatively reasonably priced. If you're looking to get into portrait, though, I wouldn't go much shorter focal length than the 40mm

I've got an old Canon 40D and while it's served me pretty well over the last two years, I'm wondering if it's good enough to stick with, or do I need to upgrade to take the best pictures. My main concern, is how limited my ISO is, only going up to 3200 even with iso expansion, and many of the newer cameras have ISO's that go as high as 256,000 with a lot less graininess. The main reason I'd like to be able to shoot with very high ISO's is I do cosplay photography, and it's a pain to have to use speedlights to compensate for how shitty the lighting is in convention halls etc. and I like doing night time photography. Any and all advice and suggestions are welcome.

if you are using a fast prime and still aren't gathering enough light for a crisp image, I'd consider playing with a new canon at a store and seeing what you think. sometimes the difference isn't as big as you think it is.

I knew that would come up. I've never been lucky enough to see a noct-nikkor in person but I think these days it's still a very good lens of course and a legend, but it's not REALLY vastly superior to everything else anymore. Don't forget that the 1.8G has aspherical elements too which is largely what made the noct so special. And of course the noct is still faster.

No other Nikon 50 has aspherics as far as I know, including the 1.4G. And the 1.8G doesn't have nano coating but it has very close to the same crisp sharp zero-flare look that the recent nano coated primes have.

Maybe you can find an used or partly damaged one?

Not even the Chinese make decent tripods for that little. Well, they do make some, and you can get them for that price on aliexpress, but they are small (kneeling shots) and really quite crappy (very wobbly)

Better spend $60-120 even when you get a Chinese one. At least it'll be something you'll want to use.

But you'll probably still want to use speedlights or led panels lights anyways, the shots will still look quite a bit better.

Getting good shots in low light still is a high-end camera feature, even today.

And even today it's not really good enough that you won't use an extra light for any short-ish exposure time when you need a good shot.

Admittedly, there is a difference. And that is shooting at f/1.2, at infinity, in the dark, with bright specular highlights. How often does that happen? Well, not really ever unless you're some kind of loser without a tripod.

I really like my A6000 so far, but what solutions would you suggest for me if I want something very wide angle at around 18mm focal length?

I'm open to anything if it's cost effective.
I don't mind manual focus at all, so if there is some cheap Canon glass I can adapt, or some cheap Minolta glass I can adapt, please tell.

Anyway, I found out there is also a "Samyang 10mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS CS Lens (Sony E Mount)"
10 mm focal length is pretty insane. I actually have no idea how good the quality is.

It's apparently the newest design of all these lenses, it's from 2014 while the 14mm is a bit older.

In general Samyang/Rokinon has good optical designs. They're pretty sharp and their wide-angle designs have good correction for coma, which means that the astro crowd likes them. A few lenses, like the 14/2.8, have a pretty whopping dose of distortion.

Mechanical quality and QC is a bit more hit-and-miss. The dud rate, where the lens is decentered or something, is supposedly much better than once it was, but they still show up from time to time. One flaw that a lot of their lenses share is poorly-calibrated distance scales. They tend to focus well beyond infinity, as well, you can't just crank the focus ring till it stops and be at infinity focus, like you can with many manual-focus lenses.

As to that particular 10/2.8 model of lens? idk, I haven't used that model. Google it, I'm sure someone somewhere shot some test charts with it and put up a review.

I'm currently debating myself between the 12mm and the 10mm.

The 10mm has 109.5° angle of view compared to 98.9°.
But the 12mm has larger f/2 aperture compared to f/2.8 apperture.

Then there's the weight, 245 gram vs 620 gram.I actually can't decide which one is the better.
245 gram is much more easier for me to handle if I hold the thing for hours, but at the same time I can't help but feel the reduced amount of glass has impacted the quality negatively.

Hmmm call me conspiracy theorist, but I suspect the Rokinon 12mm has in realty stolen the design from Zeiss Touit 12mm.

Rokinon 16mm/14mm/10mm are all 500-600 grams.

But Suddenly Rokinon introduce a 12mm in 2014, that has the same focal length as the Zeiss lens, and it coiiiiincidentally has the same ~250 gram weight as the Zeiss lens.

It's a lens for crop sensors, so it's not as wide as the others.

Well, what's your budget?

You will get more results from a 30 1.4 than you would from a new Canon body, unless you're able to step up to a 5D2 or similar. (The regular 5D is lovely, but it's not a low light beast.)

Like, if you don't have a lot of lenses, you could switch to a used Pentax K-5 with a Sigma 30 1.4, which would give you in-body stabilization as well. This would be a significant improvement. The K-5 is still fine at ISO 6400, better than the 40D at 3200. Image stabilization doesn't always help for pictures of people, but I find that it helps.

Sony doesn't give a shit about A mount anymore, it's not a good idea to get into a dead system because you won't be able to upgrade easily in the future. It also makes it harder to buy third party lenses since no third parties give a shit about A mount either, and it makes it harder to sell your used gear when you upgrade.

Check used and refurb prices on the A6000. It's one of the cheapest options for the features and quality

I'm not even sure what difference this makes.

The 10, 12 and 16mm are all designed for APS-C sized sensors.
Isn't that the only factor that matters?
I don't know how SLR vs mirrorless has any impact.

Get this - they'd even shoot the same scene multiple time, just like today. And then in the "cutting room" film was manually spliced together, effects done manually, etc .... Now we just point a slab of phone and press a skeumorphic button :-/

Because the a58 is shit and the platform is dead meaning no lens not even from third party.
The K-30 is a weather proof camera with bright pentaprism viewfinder and there are tons of lenses for K-mount, also has very good focus assist for manual focus lenses.
Peaking in liveview, AF points light up when they are in focus and with the catch in focus feature the camera can automatically fire when the AF point lights up.
Also sturdy magnesium alloy body. Full body, not like Canon or Nikon where they put a single metal plate on and call it metal body.

You need 90% or better for cleaning it. Isopropyl doesn't wash the coating off, ethanol can. It might take some time, remember to wash it easy, don't press the wetted cloth on the glass.

It's easy enough to convert a big SLR lens into a short flange mirrorless.
But it's impossible to convert a lens that's optimised for short flange into SLR lens.

Wide angle lenses for DSLR's need a retrofocus design.
Otherwise it would not be possible to focus them while leaving enough space for the mirror.

This makes them more complex and thus heavier.
But on the plus side they cause far less vignetting.

Recently took my t4i out with a sigma 18-50 2.8-4.5 lens in the forest with some mates around sunset. Fuck the lack of sensor IS on these canon cameras. My RX100 outperformed this dslr by a long shot.

I originally thought it was the lens, which I got used, so I went looking for some primes with IS, and they're ridiculously expensive.

I'm considering selling my t4i for a mirrorless / pentax k-30 that has image stabilization built in.

On another note, I love ML on this canon which is why im on the fence. Raw video is amazing.

The Rokinon has some pretty sweet wide angle and wide aperture.
But that other lens has some awesome Macro feature which could be super interesting.

They're both decently wide enough angle... maybe. I can't decide, and splitting my hairs.

There's also the usual suspects like the Olympus Mju or maybe XA, the yashica T4 is good but it has the uncle Terry tax so it's a few hundred dollars these days. Your best bet at that price range might be to just go to a thrift shop and try to find the best looking P&S they have.

I noticed something very interesting about my camera today.

The lowest base ISO is 200 on my body. However, I looked up some info on it, and found that the 'measured' ISO is 105. I did a direct raw conversion as metered for iso 200, and another pushed 1 stop (equivalent ISO 100). Check out what I found.

addendum: I got my measured ISOs mixed up between my current camera and my past camera. The measured ISO on mine is 132, so the correct adjustment is 0.7 stops. Much better.

What kind of photography?

If you want good IQ and large prints from film you are looking at medium format or larger. For that I'd say grab a Pentax 67 if you want SLR, or a Mamiya 7 if you want something compact and light.

If you need something compact and visible grain isn't too much of an issue or you are printing smaller prints then you can't go wrong with a Nikon F camera or Leica M6/M4/M3/M2.

The main issue is your $1000 budget really with that you can probably only afford the Pentax 67 or Nikon F.

There are also lots of good fixed lens 35mm point and shoots for $1000 you could easily buy a Ricoh GR1v and a bucket full of film.

Whelp. The Minolta f/1.2 suddenly look cheap in comparison now.

Anyhow, Mitakon also offers a 50mm f/0.95 Which is only around 400 dollar extra compared to the Minolta f/1.2.

So I think I should either stick to the insane bang for the buck in the Minolta f/1.4, or go all the way for the f/0.95.

I'm not saying that, since the minolta 1.4 is an older lens and I don't own one. But many new 1.4 lenses are sharper and better corrected than Mitakon's budget 0.95. Notice that the premium 0.95 lenses cost upwards of $10,000. So there is some compromise there.

For an a6000, I would be looking at 35mm lenses, not 50mm lenses.
The a6000 has a crop factor of 1.52x

50mm x 1.52 = 76 mm

35mm x 1.52 = 52.3 mm

If you want a normal, all-around lens to learn on, 35mm is the way to go. I would at least take a look at the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 lens. Slower, but incredibly good resolving (better than any of these old 1.4 lenses), and the slower aperture can help teach you to compose your images without using blurry backgrounds as a crutch.

Also, unless you've changed out your focusing screen, your manual focusing is less accurate and slower than autofocus, even on a 40D.

If you aren't using the AF on your lenses, you have no reason to stick to Canon. Get an A7 or an A7s, stick your EF canon glass on there, buy a few cheap but great old manual focus primes, and enjoy.

The quite often insane Amazon reseller pricing aside - buying a 90 Eur tripod in China certainly *should* get you something pretty good.

Rent one.

But for portraits I would go with an 85 and just zoom with my feet.
It's cheaper and has a faster aperture which is nice on a crop sensor.

I think you are the one missing the point when you want film from the same lot (rather than approximately the same age and brand - it's industrially produced film, you know?) for consistency's sake.

Consistency is the domain of digital photography to begin with.

What kind of camera? I've never been a fan of the tripod screw attaching straps so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask, but I think the better alternative is to use a normal lug-attached strap which is long enough to sling it over your neck and one shoulder so that it hangs diagonally across your chest and back. I think it's a very comfy way to carry cameras of all sizes. For full sized DSLRs I used to use neoprene Tamrac straps which were pretty nice and had a bit of stretch to take some weight off. Now I use mostly smaller cameras so I switched to this strap made by DSPTCH, I think it's an excellent strap but I wouldn't want to use it with really heavy gear.

Nikon FM and FM2, maybe FM3 but I'm not sure. Also any F or F2 with a metering prism but those are a lot more clunky. Hasselblad 500 cameras are also full-mechanical but they have optional metered prisms which take a battery, but the metered prisms don't give any autoexposure.

People say the tripod screw can become loose, but it is possible to attach the carabiner to one of the strap mounts on the camera by jerry rigging some metal ring from a hardware store if necessary.

I bought the A58 as my first DSLR, love it, has more features then Canon and Nikon for the same price. A mount is far from dead. You can use Minolta Lengendary glass and a lot of them are awesome crisp lenses that can be found super cheap. I got my A58 open box at Fry's for $268, fucking steal, checked the shutter count when I got home, 3 clicks on it, hell of a deal.

Hey /p/, I'm completely new here so forgive me if I say something stupid.

I received a gift today completely out of the blue: a brand new Canon EOS rebel T5. The reason it was gifted to me was I need to take quality photos of my product for my online store, so they assumed I needed a 'good' camera.

I'm the kind of person who will research products for weeks on end before committing to purchase, so I'm always a bit put off when I receive a gift like a camera because I didn't have a say in the matter and as a result, the kind of research I do didn't go into it. Sure enough, it seems like this camera is lacking (based on reviews) and that cameras in a similar price range are far better.

I'm not above returning the camera, but wanted to get some opinions here first. Would it be best for me to return the T5 and get something else like a D5300 or T5i? I'm thinking that I might get into photography more now that I have some of the tools and am basically trying to get the best bang for the buck.

Rule of thumb: You can use any F-mount lens that has an aperture ring and can be focused manually. (which excludes G lenses and anything DX)

There really isn't a good way to share lenses between a manual-focus Nikon and a low-end digital (eg, D3x00). Ideally you'd want either a.) a higher-end body that is okay with manual lenses (any full-frame body, I think the D7x00 is fine too if you prefer crop), or b.) a more recent film body like an F5 that speaks autofocus and doesn't need an aperture ring.

You should call up a few printer repair shops and ask them which brands they have the most problems with.
And you immediately know what to avoid.

I'm completely serous, we had a documentary on national TV over here, and they revealed how some printer brands was programmed to die after a certain time past warranty expiration.

So make those couple of calls.

I got two bad F4s from KEH. The first one, either it was never even looked at or the guy who did knew nothing about the camera. The prism or something was totally off and you couldn't see any settings.

The second one had a busted screw so you couldn't take the battery pack off. Both were supposed to be EX

Well I am looking at a Nikon 35 1.8G for DX but isn't it a bit too narrow for street photography? I mean I think the 28mm f3.5 AI lens is more appropriate. Do you think it is a good deal if I manage to lower the price of it for let's say $50? For the record my camera is Nikon D90.

IF you return it, get a Pentax K-50 or K-30. Much more worth it than the rabal and with the kit lens it can shoot the same photos. The difference is when you start using it for other than products. Weather sealing, rugged all metal body, 100% accurate pentaprism etc...

Pentax is a good beginner camera until you started acquiring lens. Pentax lens cost much more than Nikon's. Even the old Pentax lenses cost a lot more than old Nikon AI or AI-s lenses.

On crop, you're talking about a difference between 43 and 52mm or something like that. It's not going to really make much of a difference. They're both "normal" focal lengths.

You're going to be missing some very basic functionality if you go for the older lens. If saving all that money is worth it to you, that's fine, but you should walk in with your eyes open.

I've got noob question. I'm amateur/enthusiast of photography. I've been using very shitty photo camera for past 5-6 years - Kodak C180 that has cost me back then 60$.

I would like to get new photo camera but I've got limited budget. I have only about 100$-125$. I was thinking of something like Panasonic DMC-XS3 but I'd welcome any suggestions.

The question is - will I notice any difference? Both cameras are rubbish but I'm hoping that 5-6 years time gap means progress for lens and so on.

I'm taking pictures mostly indoor and with rather low light. The biggest issue with current camera is that only one out of maybe 5 pictures is sharp and focused (even if I switch on all the light sources in the room). There are also tons of noise.

TLDR: Suggest me best possible camera for 100$-125$. Is there going to be difference in quality between it and Kodak C180?

That's an incredibly low budget for a camera, just skip eating out for a few weeks and you might be able to afford something that isn't in the lowest of the low end. It's not a good idea to get a camera system that cheap unless you absolutely have to. Shitty point and shoot -> shitty point and shoot? Not a good plan.
