Beats are genuinely muddy over-priced poor sound signature shit, but to be devil's advocate, when you go see most bands live, they aren't pumping a flat neat balanced sound over the stacks. It's usually super bass heavy, and the complaint most people have with MOST headphones is that the bass power is shit (since headphones won't ever give the visceral feeling of a subwoofer)

All that being said, I'd never buy a pair, and I do like to ridicule those who do use them, and enjoy them. Audio Technica 5Ever

hey now, Sennheisser makes some great headphones. Those just aren't them. Even the HD280s are pretty great, for the price, and it only gets better from there.

my biggest gripe is that i tried about 4 different types of sennheisers in a DJ store in London and all of them were incredibly quiet, no matter how much you turned up the music. It's like they were designed just for phone calls.

M50s are better, but lack bass, but that's fine because they're monitor headphones, if you need the bass up - use your damn equaliser. Currently putting away a few pennies for some Bose 15s. Hopefully they stand up to the hype.

Most of the Sennheisers are high resistance, and do better with an amplifier. The M50s have clean bass, but also, when you crank it up with an EQ, they hold up incredibly well. No crackle or distortion. Out of an iPhone or something else with no reductive EQ settings, they sound flat, but with something where you can control your tones well, without clipping, they sound amazing. They don't improve much with amplification like the Senns do. The Bose have more pronounced bass, but as usual with bass renowned "cans", it's top-end bass, rather than the stuff down by 15hz where you really want it, and you sacrifice cleanliness and neutrality in the mids and low highs. And they don't handle EQ well.

Under $400, the M50 is the best pair of headphones I've heard, with a solid source and limited power. THAT part is opinion, but the stuff above isn't.

I used to review headphones about 6 years ago following on from my audio tech degree. Brands to keep away from were beats, bose, skullcandy, marley, anything sold in a clothes store (wesc and other "fashion" brands)

Burt, you probably had an issue when trying out high end senny's due to them being the wrong impedance for your device. 300 ohm models MUST be amped up separately.

Here's some good brands and their sound signature (personal opinion)
Senny - clean, smooth treble, non fatiguing
Beyerdynamic - lively with deep bass, sometimes a bit forward
Audio technica - clean crisp treble, bass has extension but little impact, great imaging
Sony - deep, full bass, recessed mids, smooth treble
Stax - sex in your ear pussy

I've used both Sennheiser HD280 Pros and Audio Technica ATH-M50s (and more) extensively. Then I found a pair of $10 IEMs that sound about 85% as good as my ATs. Now I barely ever use the ATs unless I'm producing or DJing.

yeah, I guess I bought the IEMs when I started taking/doing music a little less seriously. I was super incredibly serious about this stuff ~5 years ago, though, and would refuse to leave the house in anything but $100+ cans, spent all my time producing and DJing, etc.

The Audio Technica ATH-M50s are pretty sensitive and pretty low impedance (99 dB at 1 mW and 38 ohms) for closed headphones. I usually used a Sansa Clip line product when out & about which can put out more than enough juice (see: NwAvGuy's review of them). I have a Fiio E11 which I used to take around with me but I didn't generally notice a difference in fidelity so I stopped using it regularly.

When at home I would either amp them thru a vintage power amp (generally cause I already had it set up to power a pair of bookshelves) or thru the DJ mixer, so, uh, yeah.
