I used to review headphones about 6 years ago following on from my audio tech degree. Brands to keep away from were beats, bose, skullcandy, marley, anything sold in a clothes store (wesc and other "fashion" brands)
Burt, you probably had an issue when trying out high end senny's due to them being the wrong impedance for your device. 300 ohm models MUST be amped up separately.
Here's some good brands and their sound signature (personal opinion)
Senny - clean, smooth treble, non fatiguing
Beyerdynamic - lively with deep bass, sometimes a bit forward
Audio technica - clean crisp treble, bass has extension but little impact, great imaging
Sony - deep, full bass, recessed mids, smooth treble
Stax - sex in your ear pussy
