Do I need to worry about airport scanners damaging my sensor? I got a used 5d mark II a little while ago and will be travelling soon, and don't have the money to buy a new one if it fucks off.

Yes you do. Had a Sony A900 a few years ago, damn airport scanners gave the sensor thousands of dead pixels and it killed my point and shoot camera. Get a lead lined bag or have them manually check it.

Went through with an NEX a few years back and the guy outright refused to manually check it.

There is a separate tray you can use for sensitive electronic devices, I usually use it for my laptop and stuff. To be sure just ask some officials.

ALWAYS take your cameras as hand carry.

Xray machines have no effect whatsoever on cameras digital or otherwise.

They can affect undeveloped film. If you ever find yourself carrying that through airports ask to have it hand checked. Especially if you are going to several destinations because the effect is cumulative. The more times you get it scanned the greater the risk of fogging and/or colour shifts.
