Pic is from a '76 helios 44-2 at f4.

I also have a clean industar 69 but it is not sharp at all. Adjusted it for infinity and lubed it but still.

I'm waiting on an early 60s mir 1 right now and a lens turbo ii. It won't be as sharp as the takumar but hopefully it will be sharp enough to be my daily lens.

You'll care. When the fungus spreads to every lens you own.

I always thought this lens was really nice looking, the coatings are pretty colors. Weighs a fucking ton too despite being so tiny, it's entirely brass and glass.

Some lenses handed down to me. I made a thread about butchering the 50's mount, but it works with my nikon now. So it's all good. Sadly the lenses are dirty as fuck as the previous owner didn't take care of them. But was also a military photographer so that may be why they're dirty.

Paid $8 for one, $15 for the other. Same lens as far as I can tell, just a difference in marked aperture.

If you like swirly bokeh, look out for these. They're Planar-derivatives, they were made alongside the Contax-Zeiss lenses (which share the C/Y mount with the Yashica line) and pretty much 99% of the lens their T* cousins were, just somewhat inferior coatings.

It might also have fungus, but that haze almost certainly comes from misting or hazing of the elements, most likely from evaporated grease or the like.
The good thing is that a lens like that is probably worth having professionally disassembled and cleaned, and will probably be a joy to use and take great pictures when that's done.
The bad news is it would probably cost you a few hundred shekels to have done.

What would be a recommended place to have this done? The only camera stores I have locally are Richmond Camera, and they told me they won't fix old film lenses because they don't have replacement parts for them. I've tried searching, but I don't see anything here in Virginia. I'm assuming that if I wanted to get this fixed, I'd have to send it somewhere, but like I said, I have no idea who to go to for that.

If you look to the right of the frame, in the bokeh you can never have with your X-Transgendered APSC digishit, and remember that images of negative film are usually inverted for display, you will see a few whitish spots, which are sensor dust.

A couple of weeks UV should clear it. I hope you already had children or frozen your swimmers for later use. Contrary to common belief the radioactive element does not give alpha radiation only, for every alpha particle there is a substantial amount of gamma radiation which causes the yellow tinting.

Help me guys!
I'm a poor bastard and I can't afford fuji lenses for my xpro-1, after reading some threads here I decided to make a research in my area for M42 and M39 lenses only to discover that people ARE FUCKING CRAZY!
That goddamn helios crap is sold for 50 damn euros... if not more!
Pentax lenses can't be found under 200 euros, and they're not even the super takumar ones!
AND NOT EVEN IN MINT CONDITION!
200 fucking euros? really?
It's okay that there's some really good glass for those mounts like voigtlander andl leica and blah blah blah but christ, those mounts here are hyped to the extreme!
That said, I need to find another mount to adapt to my camera which gives me good lenses for a fair price, any suggestion?

I gave a look at ebay, If I want some relatively good prices I have to buy from UK or US which is quite a pain: shipping costs rises alot as the chances that the item will be damaged during the travel.
I'm looking around at local flea markets with quite bad results by now.
Once a year they make a market reserved to photographic gear near here, that's my last chance
Near here the best offer I've had for the takumar 50mm f/1.4 was 100€ without shipping and it has scratces and signs of usage which, as written on the description, "gives character to the lens".

Don't look for lenses alone, look for cameras that have the mount you're looking for. Most film SLRs sold at 'net auctions today, built in the eighties, will have some kind of a f/1.8-ish standard lens on 'em, and maybe a crappy zoom of some kind.

Also M39 Industars (CCCP glass, ridiculous flare & old-school tessar bokeh) are like 13 euros apiece, with working aperture and focusing. As a caveat, those usually have some old lubricant in them which will have become less lubey than what it should properly be, if not a bit sticky even. Definitely focusing will feel a bit uneven on a 60 year old lens. The best way to score one is by buying a soviet rangefinder at the same time, which you may or may not be into (film being what it is).

Granted, I also have no bleeding idea why Helios-44s are so bleeding expensive. Surely the price has already peaked? *crosses fingers, legs, eyes, and buttocks*

That particular lens + chinese speed booster makes for some swirly bokeh, but the DoF is unforgiving
Otherwise it seems to be fairy forgiving if it looks in focus enough on the screen without the speed booster attached

The radioactivity in old lenses comes from thorium oxide (http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Radioactive_lenses) Thorium is measurably radioactive, and it's bad for you if it gets inside you, but it is not very fierce at all. From the same page,

Very nearly all thorium is thorium-232, which decays by alpha emission (not gamma emission as the other anon claims), with a half-life of about 14 billion years. This same thing is why they're bad news if eaten, because all the radiation stays in one concentrated area. Flea markets, antique stores, thrift shops, yard sales (or tag sales or whatever the fuck you wanna call them), etc.

Seriously, people undervalue what they have more often than you would expect, I got a spotmatic 2 with a Takumar 50 1.4, 28 3.5 and 135 2.5 for 20 bucks. M39 lenses are probably not going to be cheap because a lot of the time it's Leica and Leica means its not cheap. That being said, don't give up on M42 lenses, and good luck with your search.

mir 1 grand prix brussels arrived today. Holy fuck is it clean; normally you see scratches from cleaning but nothing here, even the back element is flawless. The chrome finish is in very good shape without much tarnish. The only con is that some owner took a dremel to make marks for the aperture ring, i don't know why it's useful unless you kept the other aperture ring at f16 all the time, but that's only cosmetic and unnoticeable unless inspected.

Still waiting on the fucking adapter for it.

No, AF 35mm f/2 isn't G(imped)

However it does require an external AF motor.
And I don't think any adapters exist that have that.
So it will be manual focus only.

*pre-ai just need to change aperture ring or be manually fitted if you got a camera above a D7x00 (included) without a retracting ai tab, while on all entry level cameras you can literally fit anything f-mount regardless.

I got this f1.8 130mm 35mm cinema projector lens today for $2.5. It's got a fixed aperture and no mount - it's completely smooth all over. I realised how specific of a use it had when purchasing it but heck, that price and its extra fast aperture coaxed me into getting it.

figure out the flange distance it was made for and superglue it to a cheap ebay mount that more or less matches that flange distance. expect massive vignetting and only a portion of the center sharp. even then I doubt it would be remotely sharp. would make a cool paperweight tho.

In all seriousness though, the normal Nikkor will be fine to use. The wide open sharpness won't be drastically different to any other normal fast 50's. The thing you WILL notice will be the massively reduced contrast and heavy vignetting.
The payoff is of course wafer-thin depth of field and v. large bokeh balls.

Because once you apply normal contrast and sharpening adjustments that you should be making to literally any photo, let alone film scans, it's easy to see that the sharpness AT F/1.2! is limited by the grain of the film, and that very usable contrast is retained even in the shadows of a heavily backlit subject AT F/1.2! you stupid cunt.

LF shooters often make their own ground glass, scotch tape is often used in the back of a 35mm camera to test focus similarly.

Need some help with adapters /p/

I have an X-E1 and my father gave me his old fujica stx-1 with some lenses.
I want to use the glass on my digital camera so I searched for an adapter but I've only found this option, It's named "kiwifotos LMA-FJ_FX" and it looks like the only existing adapter.
I've also found that you have to modify it because it doesn't lock lenses properly.
Isn't there any other option?

I'm not really sure about that tripod mount on the adapter because it's basically another hole in the adapter ring but I've looked into fotodiox website and there's another one without tripod mount. Unfortunately the other adapter doesn't have that cool anodized blue lens release button.

You would have to use live view because you won't be able to focus for shit in the viewfinder, and that will fuck up the handling of the camera. You could get a focusing screen which would help, but then you can't stop down past f2.8 or so. Not sure if you would be fine with that or not.

All samples here ( statue, flowers and birds) was taken with Helios-77M-4.
Helios 44-2 is less swirly, but very cheap. And quality spread is enormous, some lens can't be good, some are soft and awful.
44M-X series is almost the same as 44-2, but marked by resolution. 44M-7 is tht best.
And 77M-4 is usually pretty good from sample to sample. And it's pretty usuable from wide open,

Not that anyone would care but, anyway, I have to tell someone.
I've ordered the cheaper fotodiox adapter (the one without tripod mount), estimated shipping for the next week.

While we're at it, here's another question
With all those lenses I've recieved a makinon 28mm f/1.9, everything looks fine the aperture ring rotate without issues but when I pull the aperture lever nothing happens.
The lever isn't hard, it just looks like there were no blades inside the lens, they're actually not visible.

What could it be? grease? the mechanism is fucked up?

lol second time I've had someone comment on that. I use these for video work, and when I'm on set, if I'm not the one grabbing the lenses, I need to make sure the PA that does knows which lens is which, especially when the lenses are inside my bag and the only thing you see when you look into it are the lens caps. Labeling the lens caps saves me time because theres less of a chance for the PA to screw up and have to make another trip to grab the right lens, which holds up production. A lot of rental houses do this. If you ever rent lens sets from them, they'll have each cap labeled with all the relevant lens info. I'm still in the middle of fully cine-modding them so they don't completely have the look, but for all intents and purposes I treat them like cine lenses.

I have some 80s XR Rikenon K-mount lenses. The 50mm isnt anything special and I hardly use it, but the 135/f2.8 is pretty nifty. Some minor webbing in the elements and its manual focus, but if you get it just right it can make some decent images.

These two are the only ones I can get from where I live, and the only noticeable difference I can see is the metal that's showing.

I find very little difference between the mirrorless adaptors unless they have aperture rings or a corrective/reducing lens.
If its under £10 it may be ever so lightly tight or lose in the e mount but over £15 and they are normally spot on.

Dynax 5000i, Dynax 7D, a99, a3000 and VG30. All have worked really well 35mm film, 5mp-20MP APSC and 24mpCMOS.
I have read that the a6000 seams to lose detail with a few lenses, the a6000 is gagging for some nice girthy Zeiss lenses. You should treat it to some!

All they are is a mettle tube, so long as they cut it the right length its fine. And most people will either be gear snobs or people who don't know what they are doing.

My MD to E Mount adaptor has a very slight amount of rotation to it talking teeny but its there and as much as people will complain it doesn't cause light leeks or mess with sharpness.

I got the cheap m42 one and the ring popped out (allen key can tighten it back up).. its the $10 adapter on ebay normally, I paid $25 for one that was local and got it next day.. wasn't patient enough.. otherwise would have got Fotga like my other adapters are.. Fotga is pretty good.

heres the situation. I have an xe2 with an eos speedbooster. I do not have aperture control with eos lenses. I can mount nearly any 35mm slr lens to the speedbooster (except canon fd) with an adapter that is generally very slim. Obviously the whole setup isn't going to be pancake thin, but a pancake lens helps a lot since the speedbooster adds an inch.

Your speed booster is only going to be useful for a handful of lenses, trade it in for a canon adaptor with aperture control.

If you can have the (newer) novoflex, go for it. All the others I have tried are loose one the E-mount side and more prone to damaging the mount ring.

Novoflex adapters are in aluminium BTW.

Pentacon was a group branding, it incorporated the five optical factories of the GDR. Most of the lenses were from CZJ or Meyer Goerlitz. Considering the 50/1.8 was the step-up from the more generic 50/2.8 lenses it is most likely the same optical formula as the Pancolar and also manufactured at CZJ but put into the more common Pentacon housing. I have the 135mm/2.8 Pentacon with the 6 blade aperture which is the same formula as the Meyer Orester and also manufactured at the Meyer Goerlitz factory.

I have the 29/2.8, what I gathered it was a fairly common piece of glass. Very soft corners, good for the masses. On APS-C however it performs very well and focuses quite close.
The old M42 teles were not very good, lots of CA, mostly used for B&W film. The Tair 300mm photosniper is still an excellent lens, it was mostly developed for the KGB, released later for nature photographers. The front aperture makes the images "pop" into almost 3D.

Fun fact about the Tair, the famous bird photographer Bence Máté started with a Zenit SLR and a Tair 300mm regular focus ring variant. The whole set was painted camouflage in the factory. He bought it when he was 12 (!) from breeding and selling rabbits from his backyard.
