To expand on this, it's also the bare minimum criteria that all photos should have, to avoid being discarded. To praise someone for this is like telling your employee they're getting a raise because they haven't shit on the floor all month.

I don't think it's about the way it's accomplished, I think it's only about the way it looks.
Just because there are two identical photos and one is taken with fully manual settings and other with fully auto, it doesn't make one better than the other.

When shooting into direct sunlight you want to expose for the subject. You wan to try to expose as far the the right a possibl without blowing out important background details. You would overexpose the background and bring it down in post.

1. Learn to resize all your photos before you post them here

2. Black and White doesn't automatically make your photos good. Look up photographers of a style you like and see if they share their post workflow. Study them, but don't copy them.

3. Keep shooting. Even if your photos suck and people tell you they suck don't get discouraged.

I think it's good advice, although I don't think he should stop posting. If you've ever heard of the game of Go, the advice here is reminiscent of the phrase "lose your first 50 games as quickly as you can" which is a way of encouraging a newbie to learn from his mistakes.

Let's be honest... relying solely on constructive criticism (or if you're on /p/, "constructive" criticism) is not the most effective way to progress as a photographer. We need some time to ourselves.
