Will Nikon and Canon be able to make F and EF mount mirrorless cameras?

Or do you think they are more likely to go the SONY route and release a new system with a new mount and support their existing lens lineup via an adapter?

I have heard about both Nikon and Canon having FF mirrorless patents, has anyone seen them? does it mention anything about the mount that might be utilized?

I am not here to argue whether SLRs are going to be around forever, it is inevitable that both Nikon and Canon will eventually release higher end mirrorless system cameras, I am just curious as to what people think about the fate of the existing lens lineups.
